Salman Khan held guilty in 2002 hit-and-run case, sentenced to five years in jail
Salman Khan was on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 delivered the verdict in the 2002 hit-and-run case by a Mumbai sessions court. He is convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the case. Mr. Khan is now facing upto five years in jail.
What exactly happened in the sessions court today?
Salman Khan arrived at the court in a white shirt and jeans. Additional Sessions Judge DW Deshpande delivered the verdict to Mr. Khan.
“You were driving the car, under the influence of alcohol and without a license,” to the Judge to Salman Khan. He further added, “All charges are proven.”
The Judge then paused for a moment, and asked Salman Khan if he had anything to say about the verdict. Mr. Khan remained silent for a while. After sometime he denied all the charges.
The prosecution examined around 27 witnesses in the case, which included eyewitnesses, the injured persons in the accident, employees of a bar where Salman Khan was drinking, the doctor who took a blood sample of Mr. Khan, doctors who treated the injured in 2002, forensic experts and police offers.
Amid heavy security around the court, the judgement was announced. Only lawyers, media and court staff were allowed in the courtroom. Heavy number of fans, media teams, lawyers and fans had gathered around the court complex since morning.
The situation even went out of control once, when the Judge had to ask the police to intervene and stop the crowd from entering the courtroom. The proceeding was even briefly stopped for a while, and finally the Judge ordered the doors be closed, as the disturbance from outside went out of control.
The court set the date of tomorrow, May 7, 2015 to decide on the quantum of punishment.
It was an emotional journey for Salman Khan today from his home to the court. Mr. Khan’s mother gave him a warm hug before he left for the court.
It remains to be seen now, how the case moves ahead. A 2002 case gets it’s closure in a sessions court after 13 years. That tells a lot about the legal system of India.
